What does ISO 45003 contain?
The standard is designed to help organizations prevent accidents and injuries in the workplace by providing a framework for managing and improving occupational health and safety (OHS) performance.
The standard is based on the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards for quality and environmental management systems, respectively, and follows a similar structure and process. The standard is divided into four main sections:
- Context of the organization
- Leadership and worker participation
- Planning and implementation
- Evaluation and improvement
The first section, context of the organization, requires organizations to understand their internal and external factors that can impact OHS performance. This includes understanding the legal and regulatory requirements, the organization’s culture and values, and its stakeholders’ expectations.
The second section, leadership and worker participation, requires organizations to establish a leadership structure and system for OHS management. This includes the appointment of an OHS manager and the development of a OHS policy. It also requires the active involvement of workers in the OHSMS, through the establishment of a workers’ OHS committee, for example.
The third section, planning and implementation, requires organizations to identify and assess OHS risks and hazards, and to develop and implement controls to mitigate or eliminate them. This includes developing procedures for incident reporting and investigation, and implementing a training program for workers.
The fourth section, evaluation and improvement, requires organizations to evaluate the effectiveness of the OHSMS and to make continuous improvements to it. This includes the regular review of the OHS policy, the measurement of OHS performance, and the implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
One of the key benefits of implementing an OHSMS based on ISO 45003 is that it can help organizations improve their OHS performance, which in turn can lead to a reduction in mental illness, and psychological accidents and injuries in the workplace. By following the standard’s framework, organizations can better understand and manage OHS risks and hazards, and can continuously improve their OHS performance over time.
ISO does not operate standardised certification for 45003, in the way they do for 9001 quality standard or 27001 Information Security Mangagement Standards.
